Workshop 2: Engaging Defense States
Offered In-Person and Live Online
Learn how to introduce defense states in sessions in ways that are tolerable and even fun. Bring curiosity, imagination, and creativity in ways that allow clients to safely recognize their most automatic and persistent defense mechanisms.
In this workshop, we will explore the theories that give us insight into safely engaging defense states. Based in ego state theory and EMDR, learn interventions designed to make what has been intolerable tolerable. This workshop includes experiential exercises and demonstrations to deepen understanding of the strategies that will be presented. Experiential exercises will be adapted for video participants.
Though taught through the lens of child therapy, the concepts apply to adolescent and adult work as well — especially for clinicians who use IFS, ego state, or other parts-based approaches.
